Anthropic (Claude) API key
Let Claspine call Claude models using your own Anthropic account.
This connects Claude to your Claspine project. Claspine uses your key only for the requests your app makes, and Anthropic bills you directly. A separate workspace keeps Claspine’s usage and limits apart from anything else you use Claude for.
Words you’ll see
- API key
- A long secret string that lets software use your account, like a password made for programs. Anyone who has it can spend on your account, so treat it like a password.
- Spending limit / budget
- A cap or alert you set at the provider so a mistake or abuse cannot run up an unexpected bill.
- Model
- The specific AI you call (for example a fast, cheap one or a larger, smarter one). Claspine’s AI Gateway lets you choose models and fall back to another if one fails.
- AI Gateway route
- A list of models Claspine tries in order for a given kind of request. If the first fails, Claspine moves to the next.
Before you start
- An account at console.anthropic.com with credits or a payment method (a Claude.ai subscription is separate and does not include API usage).
Steps
- Sign in at console.anthropic.com.
- Open Settings → Workspaces and create a workspace named, for example, “Claspine”.
- Open Settings → Limits and set a spend limit for that workspace.
- Open Settings → API keys, click Create key, choose the Claspine workspace and give the key a name.
- Copy the key. It starts with
sk-ant-and is shown only once. - Open the Claspine console, choose your project and go to AI Gateway.
- Under 1. Your AI provider keys, find Anthropic (click Show all if you don’t see it) and click Add key. (The Secret Vault lists the same keys under AI Models.)
- Paste the values from the steps above and click Save key. Claspine encrypts them straight away and will only ever show the last few characters again.
- Under 2. Your AI route, choose this provider and pick a model, then save. The list comes live from your account, so you only see models you can use.
- Send a test request from your app. The usage appears on your bill at the provider, not on Claspine’s.

Keep it safe
- The workspace limit caps what Claspine can spend with this key.
- Revoke and replace the key in Anthropic’s console if it may have been exposed, then update it in Claspine.
Claspine stores the values encrypted, never shows them again in full, and never sends them to your app or SDK.
If something goes wrong
- Requests fail with a credit or billing error.
- Add credits under Settings → Billing in the Anthropic Console.
